3-Star TE Willie Rodriguez Commits To Kentucky

Updated: Jun 25, 2023

Kentucky has secured a commitment from 3-star tight end, Willie Rodriguez.

That makes it the 6th commitment this month for the Wildcats. The highly touted in-state (Covington Catholic) TE chose Kentucky over the likes of South Carolina, Purdue, Virginia Tech, and Louisville among others.

The last month for Rodriguez has been hectic as he has visited Kentucky, Purdue, and Virginia Tech. A certain SEC east program was really hoping he would hold off on his commitment so they could hopefully get him on campus. Kentucky's staff and QB commit Cutter Boley sealed the deal for the cats. So who is UK getting in Willie Rodriguez?

Rodriguez, who is 6'4" and 240lbs, plays football and wrestles for the Colonels. I took some time this week to sit down a watch his junior year film and let me tell you, there is a lot to like about this kid. To start, Covington Catholic lined him up a ton of ways. He was split outside at receiver quite a bit but where he really thrives is with a hand in the turf on the line. During these plays where he had his hand in the turf, they ran the play action to perfection and Rodriguez was wide open 70% of the time. He sells the play action very well and makes the defensive end or linebacker think he's blocking and smoothly breaks into a route up the seam.

He also runs very well after the catch, with it usually taking multiple defenders to drag him down on most plays. There were some highlights of him going up and high pointing jump balls in the endzone but also pancaking poor defenders into the turf. By his film, he looks the part of a SEC TE and seems like the perfect tight end for a Coen-led play action offense. Sells the fakes, not afraid to get nasty in the blocking game, and has a massive catch radius.

All in all, I think Willie could end up being the best skill player in this class when it's all said and done. So where does Kentucky turn next? They are hoping for good news soon regarding players like Damarion Witten, Brian Robinson, Kendall Jackson, Cameron Keys, and many others.

The dice are scorching hot and I don't expect them to go cold anytime soon.
