Alvin Brooks III’s Decision To Come To Kentucky

As we start to get to know the new men’s basketball coaching staff, including the head coach, many stories like these will surface over the next few weeks as the staff wants to connect with the fanbase and introduce themselves. It’s a great feeling to have an energized coaching staff that is eager to connect with the fans in many ways whether that be through social media or official media opportunities.

On Tuesday afternoon, Alvin Brooks III jumped on to The Leach Report, hosted by UK Sports Network’s Tom Leach. Making his Kentucky radio debut, Tom asked him what went in to making his decision to leave the Baylor men’s basketball program after all that he assisted with in building it from nothing under Scott Drew’s helm during his time in Waco, Texas. As Alvin Brooks III started to think about those reasonings, he listed off 3 main points.

“First of all, I think Lexington is a great spot for our family. We have two sons with autism, and the resources here to help our sons, we feel like will be great,” said Coach Brooks.

“After that, I mean, Kentucky Basketball is Kentucky Basketball. My Dad was here for two years. He raved about how much he loved Lexington, how much he loved the program and the support from the fanbase, and after doing a lot of research and talking with Coach Pope, and actually being around him and the staff, I felt comfortable to be able to make a move and leaving a spot where we won 73% of our games in 8 years. Plus a National Championship and two Big 12 Championships. It had to be a special place in order for us to leave Baylor and we (family) felt like this was it.”

He would finish with, “I did my research. I talked to different people that worked for him, I talked to different coaches that know him, and everybody raved about how much of a great person he is.” After his formal interview with Pope, he said, “We had a chance to connect in a lot of different conversations and I felt comfortable with him. I felt comfortable in the vision where he wants Kentucky Basketball to be moving forward.”

As a regular listener to Tom Leach’s show and someone that admires his great work, when I heard this interview with the new Assocate Head Coach I quickly thought it was one of the best introduction interviews that I’ve ever heard. Alvin Brooks III gave some great points on his decision that just felt unique and genuine, and not just coach speak. The entire episode was great as well, where new women’s basketball head coach Kenny Brooks joined the show to give an overview of his new team at his new program. I recommend you go back and listen to it for yourself, which you can with this link.

Alvin Brooks III joins Cody Fueger, Jason Hart, and Mark Fox to help establish Mark Pope’s first coaching staff at Kentucky.

As news became official of the hiring on April 25th, Mark Pope said this on the addition. “Alvin Brooks is a national champion coach, three times over. He is one of the most highly regarded tacticians, recruiters and relationship-builders in all of college basketball. He’s been mentored by some of the great coaches of the game, including Bruce Weber and Scott Drew. He and his wife, Tiffany, and their sons AJ and Austin are going to be a big part of Big Blue Nation and help us bring home No. 9.”

Following up, Alvin Brooks III said, “I am so excited to join Coach Pope and his staff and be a part of the Big Blue Nation. I’m very appreciative of the opportunity to join a storied program, with such a passionate fan base as we chase banners together. My family and I are grateful to Coach Pope and Mitch Barnhart and I can’t wait to get started.”
