Chuck Martin Hired As Final Assistant Coach

Updated: Jul 26, 2023

Kentucky Men's Basketball has finalized its coaching search for its final assistant coaching vacancy. Today, it was announced that former Oregon Ducks Assistant Coach, Chuck Martin, would be joining the 2023-24 men's basketball staff. Martin was given the title of both assistant coach, as well as, recruiting coordinator.

He'll be having a reunion with Head Coach, John Calipari, after the two worked alongside back in 2006-08 during Calipari's Memphis days. They had a good run during their time in Memphis which included a national runner-up finish in the 2007-08 season.

During the press release, Martin said, "I am extremely excited to be reunited with Coach Cal. I'm looking forward to joining his tremendous staff and being a part of something greater than myself."

It was also stated during Kentucky's press release that Chuck Martin will be tasked with providing strategies to help advance the program while offering additional counsel on all aspects of the program, including recruiting, scouting, player development, and special projects as assigned by the head coach. Also as Martin being the recruiting coordinator, he will independently manage official and unofficial visits and be responsible for all recruiting strategies for the program.

This is what John Calipari had to say about Chuck Martin joining his coaching staff:

Chuck is a veteran in this profession who will be a great benefit to our team and staff."

He continued with, “He has ties not only to me when we were on staff at Memphis together but also to several other members of our staff. Chuck is an established coach who will be our assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, looking to open new doors to make our successful recruiting even stronger.”

Chuck Martin has been extremely successful in the college basketball ranks since 1999. He's been a part of several highly-touted programs such as Seton Hall, UMass, Drexel, St John’s, Memphis, Marist, Indiana, South Carolina, and lastly Oregon.

John Calipari now has a completed coaching staff with Chuck Martin, whom will join Orlando Antigua, Chin Coleman, Bruiser Flint, as well as Riley Welch who is a graduate assistant coach on the bench, alongside Tyler Ulis who is a student assistant coach. This addition is huge because Martin was tabbed as one of the "top fifty major assistants" in college basketball just a few years back, and also because Kentucky now has a full staff.

Remember, the "summer season" starts in less than a week. It would've been weird not having a full staff, but now we do.
