Deone Walker Added To Multiple Preseason Watch Lists

Kentucky goes into the 2023 season with a newfound confidence in their defensive line unit. Among that confident bunch is true sophomore Deone Walker. Walker goes into the season on the heels of one of the better true freshman defensive linemen Kentucky has seen in the modern era. As a freshman, Walker was named an All-American from the Football Writers of America, the Athletic, College Football News, on3.com, 247Sports.com and Pro Football Focus. The highly sought after defensive lineman was also named to the SEC All-Freshman team and was a semifinalist for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award. With accolades that can list on and on, the 6-foot-6, 330-pounder out of Detroit is looking for an even bigger 2nd season.

The preseason watch lists Walker is included in include the Lott IMPACT Trophy, Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Outland Trophy. Finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy are looked at as the best defensive players in the country and will be named by the FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club on November 15th. The winner for the award will be announced on December 4th at the Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Home Depot College Football College Football Awards will announce the winner of the Outland Trophy live on ESPN in December, the same show announcing the Maxwell Award winner, a watch list transfer quarterback Devin Leary was recently added to.

Walker finished 2022 playing in all 13 games and started 11 of those 13. As a true freshman, Walker was a force to be reckoned with and finished with 40 total tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss (third on team), and five quarterback hurries (second on team). The star defensive lineman also recorded two pass breakups, one sack and one forced fumble. After adding North Carolina transfer Keeshawn Silver, good luck to those trying to keep that tandem from a quarterback in 2023. With names such as Josiah Hayes, Jamarius Dinkins and Octavious Oxendine and plans on improvement for months in that particular area, 2023 could be the season to get that room in check.
