DJ Wagner Named SEC Freshman Of The Week

The first of many awards to come for Kentucky's DJ Wagner was announced on Monday as he has won this week's version of SEC Freshman of the Week. After a slow start to the year as John Calipari's lead guard, Wagner finally got it going this week in his two games versus Stonehill and Marshall.

In that first game mentioned above, he went for 22 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block in an overtime win while also making multiple big plays down the stretch. Four days later in a 36-point blowout win against Marshall, Wagner took over tallying 28 points, 5 assists, 3 steals, 1 rebound, 1 block, and 1 turnover on 10-14 shooting (2-5 3PT). That's a combined 50 points in his last two games. Here's what John Calipari had to say on that.

DJ Wagner's award is the 95th SEC Freshman of the Week honor given out to a Kentucky player throughout the John Calipari Era. I'm sure he hopes to keep this hot streak going as the number eight team in America in the Miami Hurricanes come into town on Tuesday night. Through the first six, he is averaging 14.5 points, 3.7 assists, and 1.7 steals per game.
