Kentucky adds a walk-on to the roster
The season starts in just three weeks, and Kentucky is still feeling out the roster.
With the departure of walk-on Isaac DeGregorio, who left the basketball program last week due to personal reasons, Kentucky was left needing to fill in his spot on the team and they found someone to do it.
This move by Kentucky to add Watkins was a tactic done by John Calipari to get a future commitment by the No.1 player in the class of 2023, DaJuan Wagner Jr. Kareem Watkins is the step-son of Dajuan Wagner, the well known recruit that played for Calipari in Memphis.
Put two and two together and you'd realize that Kentucky is show loyalty to Wagner, and hope to see it returned when his son commits in 2023, as he is the nations No.1 overall player.
Kareem is a great kid with a terrific work ethic who is going to be a great addition to our team," Calipari said. "Kareem knows our expectations of him. We want him to come in here and be a great teammate and help us in practice. His stepfather, Dajuan, who played for me at Memphis, has really instilled a drive in Kareem and I look forward to seeing him continue to develop here with family."
Kareem Wakins, a 5'8, 145-pound guard out of Camden, New Jersey, will finalize Kentucky's 2020-21 roster. Watkins played at Kingsway Regional High School in Camden, and averaged 8.7 points per game across 26 games during his senior season.
"These last few days have been surreal," Watkins said. "I grew up wanting to play basketball on the college level. To have the opportunity to do so at a place like Kentucky and under a Hall of Fame coach like John Calipari is a dream come true. I understand what the expectations are of me. I'm excited to come in and be a part of this team and work hard every day to help my teammates and this team chase its goals."
