Kentucky vs. Akron Recap

Updated: Sep 21, 2023

Kentucky hosted the zips from Akron on Saturday night in Kroger Field and moved to 3-0. After a slow start, Kentucky churned out a solid win. Here's how it went down.

Kentucky won the toss and elected to receive. They wasted no time as they put together a beautiful drive that ended in a pass to Josh Kattus for his first touchdown as a wildcat. Kentucky and Akron traded drives. Kentucky put together a great drive but after a big play by Jordan Dingle he fumbled fighting for extra yards and Akron recovered in the endzone. Just before halftime, Kentucky got the ball and with just under 30 seconds to play. Leary threw a beautiful ball to Tayvion Robinson who went up and reeled it in for a touchdown.

Halftime score: Kentucky 14, Akron 0.

In the second half, Akron added a field goal early but Kentucky had some electric plays. On a 3rd and 11, Akron sent pressure and had Leary wrapped up (or so they thought). Leary somehow saw Ray Davis in the flat and got him the ball and Davis took it 58 yards to the house to expand the lead to 21-3. That play might be a candidate for sportcenter top 10. Davis wasn't done though. The next drive, Davis found a crease on the right side of the line and took it 55 yards to the house. Kentucky muffed a punt and Akron recovered but no damage was done was they missed a field goal attempt wide right. Leary did go down in the 4th quarter after what looked like a late hit by an Akron defender but he eventually got up and jogged off the field. Maybe a case of the wind being knocked out of him. Kaiya Sheron played the rest of the game as a precaution. After Akron turned it over on downs, NC State transfer RB Demie Sumo-Karngbaye found a seam a ran 42 yards and also got a few more yards at the end thanks to a late hit. He punched it in two plays later to bring us to our final score.

Final score: Kentucky 35, Akron 3.

Kentucky will face Vanderbilt in Nashville next week in their SEC opener. It will be a noon (EST.) kickoff.
