Two Kentucky Women's Basketball Players Enter Transfer Portal

Updated: Mar 13

Just yesterday it was made official that Kentucky parted ways with former head basketball coach, Kyra Elzy. It didn't take long before the after effects of Elzy's firing would be felt throughout the rest of the women's basketball program. Today two players from the roster announced their decisions to put their name into the transfer portal, leaving the program. Both Ajae Petty and Zennia Thomas announced their decisions on social media earlier today in search of their new destinations.

The first loss of the day was the one that stung the most. Kentucky is losing their leading scorer and leading rebounder in Ajae Petty. Petty averaged a double-double with 14.2 points per game and 10.6 rebounds per game for the Wildcats. She also shot an incredible percentage from the field, averaging 50.7% for the entire 2023-24 season. Ajae is originally from Maryland and will have one more year of college basketball eligibility left with whichever team she chooses to finish out her collegiate career for. Big loss for Kentucky, huge gain for the next roster.

The second departure of the day really doesn't surprise me all that much but sophomore forward, Zennia Thomas, entered her name into the transfer portal as well. If you have followed the women's basketball team at all this season you might remember that Thomas was a part of the team at the beginning of the 2023-24 season but was eventually dismissed from the team back in January. Thomas only managed to play in seven games for the Cats before getting dismissed. She averaged just 2 points and 1.7 rebounds in 11.3 minutes per game.

Thomas was initially suspended indefinitely for “disciplinary matters” following her last game against Cincinnati and was ultimately dismissed a couple of months later. “We hold our players to a high standard at Kentucky," said previous Kentucky head coach Kyra Elzy.

In the new age of the transfer portal, having players come and go in any collegiate sport is the new norm. However, when there is a coaching change for the team that adds just another hurdle to keep your star athletes on your roster for the new incoming coach. Managing rosters have become just as important as anything for the sport. This is why it is crucial that Mitch Barnhart makes the correct hire after Elzy's departure.
