Oscar Tshiebwe Named AP Player of the Year
Updated: Apr 2, 2022
The "Big O" continues to bring home more postseason awards. Not only was Oscar named the Associated Press National Player of the Year, but he also was named the 2022 Oscar Robertson Award winner. The Oscar Robertson Trophy is the longest consistently presented award in college basketball history. The award is chosen by a vote from U.S. Basketball Writers Association members and was presented to him on Friday at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
Oscar is also a consensus All-American as well as the SEC Player of the Year. Tshiebwe ended the season as just the second Kentucky Wildcat since 1978-79 to finish the season leading the team in 5 categories. These include points per game (17.4), rebounds per game (15.1), steals per game (1.8), blocks per game (1.6), and field-goal percentage with a minimum of 100 attempts (60.6%). Oscar is in some pretty good company as Anthony Davis is the only other Wildcat to achieve this remarkable feat.
Oscar Tshiebwe has a long list of awards this year and they are as followed:
NABC National Player of the Year
NABC Pete Newell Big Man of the Year
NCAA Consensus All-America First Team
SEC Player of the Year (coaches/media)
USA Today National Player of the Year
The Athletic’s National Player of the Year
The Field of 68 National Player of the Year
College Hoops Today National Player of the Year
Whether or not we have seen the last of Oscar Tshiebwe in a Kentucky uniform remains to be seen, however, Kentucky fans are absolutely blessed to have had the opportunity to watch him this season.
I'm going to leave you with some highlights from Oscar's amazing season at Kentucky to hold you ov.
