Reed Sheppard Wins Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Year Award

Just last week Reed Sheppard earned some pretty impressive honors as he was named the SEC Freshman of the Year for the Wildcats, which was well deserved in my opinion. The season he's had this far will be one to remember when it's all said and done. However, the talented guard from eastern Kentucky continues to earn honors on a national level, picking up another one today.

Reed Sheppard has been awarded the Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Year award.

He was chosen by the (USBWA) United States Basketball Writers Association, making him just the third Kentucky player to win the prestigious award since it was initiated back in 1989. Sheppard joins some pretty talented names in Anthony Davis (2012) and John Wall (2010) who both won the award during their time in Lexington.

There are a ton of deserving freshman across the country but Reed's numbers over the 2023-24 season speak volumes on why he was chosen. He's averaged 12.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 2.5 steals in his freshman campaign all while averaging 29 minutes a game of playing time. It doesn't stop there. Reed is known widely for his amazing shooting percentages as he's managed to shoot an astonishing 54.3 percent from the field and 52.5 percent from beyond the three-point line in Kentucky's 32 games. He is also extremely consistent when it comes to shooting free-throws, making 83.1 percent from the charity stripe.

Reed Sheppard is also closing in on history for the most steals in a single-season as a Kentucky Wildcat. His 80 steals this season rank second in program history with the only other player to have more being Rajon Rondo with 87. This season has seemed to go by in a flash but if you have had a hard time keeping up with all of Reed's accolades, here is a better list.

  • USBWA Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Year

  • SEC Freshman of the Year (coaches)

  • All-SEC Second Team (coaches)

  • All-SEC Second Team (AP)

  • All-SEC Freshman Team (coaches)

  • Dick Vitale’s “Diaper Dandy” of the Year

  • Field of 68 Third-Team All-America

  • College Hoops Today (Rothstein) National Sixth Man of the Year

  • ESPN National Freshman of the Year (Borzello)

  • SEC Freshman of the Week (Mar. 11)

  • SEC Freshman of the Week (Mar. 4)

  • SEC Freshman of the Week (Dec. 26)

  • SEC Freshman of the Week (Dec. 4)

If Reed came out and announced tomorrow that this would be his one and only year as a Kentucky Wildcat, all you could do is shake his hand and wish him the best. These kinds of numbers are not something you see very often and you have to commend the kid for his effort over this past year. Just enjoy him for the remainder of the season and we will see what happens after that.
