Three-star EDGE Steven Soles Jr. Commits To Kentucky
Kentucky kicked off what is likely to be a big recruiting month by landing Powell (TN) EDGE rusher Steven Soles Jr. He had offers from Alabama, Missouri, Mississippi State, Miami, and Virginia Tech. Fresh off a visit to Kentucky, the staff sat down with him and said that his offer was commit-able and they'd love to take his commitment. He took a few days to reflect on the recruiting process and ultimately decided that Kentucky was the choice. He announced his commitment on the "NO PLAYBOOK" podcast on YouTube.
Soles stands in at 6'3 225lbs but plays with a lot more power and has all the traits that Brad White has looked for in these outside linebacker/EDGE rusher type roles. He really reminds me of Boogie Watson coming out of high school. If you've read any of my previous articles, you know I'm a football film junkie so lets dive into the tape and see who Brad White is getting is Steven Soles Jr.
The first thing that stands out is he can either play with his and in the dirt or he can play standing up. Always good to have a guy who is experienced playing both ways. After a minute of watching film, you can see the first step explosiveness and extremely active hands. 90% of the time, Soles is getting his hands on or redirecting the OL's punch causing major whiffs. His thinner frame allows him to bend the corner past the tackle quickly and put a hurting on opposing QB's and RB's. When teams threw a TE in to help chip or double team him, Soles was very good at being physical at the point of attack and sifting through the action to find the ball carrier. Some of the hits in his film make you almost jump out of your seat. If you want to watch his film, click here.
Soles is a former 2021 5A State Champion at Powell and they will look to win another state title this season with Soles being the anchor on defense. He also might have the coolest nickname. He says he goes by "Sack 'em Soles" and that is something I can 100% get behind.
Kentucky football is not done on the recruiting trail and shouldn't have to wait long for another Yahtzee.
