Tennessee Loses Star DB Ahead Of Saturdays Rivalry Game

The Tennessee Volunteers received some devastating news before loading onto the busses and traveling up I-75 for a huge SEC east matchup in Lexington.

Senior defensive back Kamal Hadden announced on his Instagram that he will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. He was injured during the game last Saturday vs. Alabama and now the Volunteers are without one of the best DB's in the SEC for the rest of the season.

To get a feel for the type of player Hadden was for the Vols this year, let's take a look a some statistics. Hadden had played safety for the Volunteers before but he has primarily been at cornerback this season. He is tied for 2nd in the SEC in pass break-ups with 7 and tied for 3rd in interceptions with 3. According to PFF, after 7 weeks, he is the 4th highest graded cornerback at 86.5 and has graded out at a whopping 90.2 in pass coverage. That 90.2 rating is good for 2nd in the country. He has been targeted 33 times and had only given up 12 receptions for 96 yards. Simply put, this guy was playing the best football of his career and his loss is going to be a major blow for this Tennessee defense.

I hope he heals up quickly as we don't like to see anyone get injured on either side. This rivalry is everything, but we never want to see a player get hurt. The football game is never more important than that, ever.

Tennessee will look to overcome the loss and the Wildcats will look to take advantage of a thin secondary through the air on Saturday night. Kentucky vs. Tennessee will kickoff on ESPN at 7:00pm.
