University Of Louisville To Hire Former Kentucky Assistant As Head Coach

The time has come for University of Louisville to hire a mens basketball coach, and for most Louisville as well as Kentucky fans, Kenny Payne has been a hot topic over the last few months.

Today, there are multiple reports that suggest exactly what Kentucky fans have been most concerned about, Louisville is expected to name Kenny Payne as head coach on Friday.

Payne, former UofL player, coached at Kentucky from 2010-2020 under John Calipari and helped win a national championship in 2012. Kenny Payne was involved with a LONG list of players recruited into “La Familia” including De’Aaron Fox, Malik Monk, Tyler Ulis, Bam Adebayo, and many other former Kentucky players.

Kenny Payne has been a beloved assistant under Cal, and the two are still very close. There could be bad blood soon, assuming Louisville seems to be interested in long time Kentucky lean DJ Wagner. Losing the #1 rated player in the 2023 class to the team down the road would be a huge slap in the face to the Kentucky program.

Calipari coached father of DJ Wagner, Dajuan Wagner at Memphis. The relationship between the two has been great over the years, and Calipari even has DJ’s stepbrother, Kareem Watkins as a walk-on with the program.

It will be interesting to see over the coming months who Kenny Payne will have join his staff, and although most wish Kenny Payne success with his first head coaching job, it is worth noting that the rivalry will not die.

It’s forever L’s down.
