Women’s Basketball: Alabama Preview

Following a valiant fourth quarter effort against top-ranked South Carolina on Thursday night, Kentucky now turns their attention to a road matchup against Alabama.

Like Kentucky, the Crimson Tide are coming into today’s game with very little to lose as their hopes of postseason play are essentially out the window. Alabama is currently 12-10 on the season overall and 3-8 in SEC play. Kristy Curry’s team has lost seven of their last nine games with their lone wins coming against Auburn and Vanderbilt. If you want to know how even these teams are, Kentucky’s last nine are similar as they have lost eight of their last nine.

Alabama is led by an excellent backcourt trio of Megan Abrams, Brittany Davis, and Jamya Minho-Young. All three guards are averaging double-digit scoring led by Davis’ 16.2 PPG. Davis is also a menace on the glass averaging 7 RPG as a guard. For Kentucky to bring home a road win, they will need to play sound defense in the backcourt.

Both teams have quality players in the backcourt. The difference in this game is going to be predicated on the performances of each front court. While Dre‘Una Edwards is Kentucky’s second leading scorer in terms of averages, her presence down low has not been too intimidating for opponents. Fortunately for the Wildcats, Alabama‘s bigs have not been too intimidating for opponents either.

At this point, the remaining of the season is free basketball for BBN to see who is going to be impactful going into next season. This is why I expect solid performances from Jada Walker and Emma King moving forward. With the freedom to play care free, Kentucky has the potential to get back in the win column today.

Tipoff is at 2 PM ET and will be aired on the SEC Network.
