Women's Basketball: Kyra Elzy Has a Public Message For Her Team

The Kentucky women's basketball team is limping into February following a brutal January that left the Wildcats at 9-9 (2-6 SEC). Despite the rough stretch, Kyra Elzy continues to express her love and confidence in her team, and she made that public following Kentucky's heartbreaking loss at LSU on Sunday afternoon. "I LOVE this team. I'm rolling with my crew in @kentuckywbb ALL DAY LONG." Elzy wrote in a Tweet earlier this week.

She continued to write and reference the fact that her team has been shorthanded over the past few weeks. Major contributors such as Dre'Una Edwards, Robyn Benton, and Jazmine Massengill have missed time within the past month. Despite being shorthanded, Elzy continues to praise her team for their resiliency and effort. Unfortunately for the 'Cats, their competitive spirit has not translated to winning basketball.

Why is Elzy making this message at this point in the season when all hope seems to be lost? The answer is simple… because there is hope.

A .500 record in early February is not an ideal situation by any stretch, but Kentucky's February slate of games are extremely favorable. Outside of a home matchup against top ranked South Carolina, the Wildcats do not have another game against a ranked SEC opponent. Furthermore, Kentucky should be getting their full roster back for this final stretch of the season. It is easy to look at how the Wildcats have performed over the past month and rule them out. In fact, I have been doing that myself. With that said, the talent on this team is still there and the team seems to really love coach Elzy despite the results on the court.

For Kentucky to have any shot at making a case to the NCAA selection committee, they will have to play nearly perfect basketball over the next month. It will without a doubt be an uphill climb, but Kyra Elzy is playing this situation perfectly by uplifting her team for this final stretch and making it public to get BBN behind them.
